Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Knowledge of Japanese not required. Examination of classical poetry of Nara and Heian periods, with focus on poetry anthology called “Man’yoshu” (Collection of Myriad Ages, 8th century) and on “Kokinwakashu” (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems, early 10th century). Letter grading.
